For more than forty years I have worked as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, supervisor, lecturer, clinical leader and writer within the NHS and independent practice. I trained and worked as a Consultant Psychotherapist at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust and have been in private practice in Beckenham since 1995.
During my career I was one of the founding members of Fitzjohn's Service, a specialist psychotherapy service for adults with severe and enduring mental health difficulties and personality disorders. Throughout my professional life I have been committed to developing a psychoanalytic understanding of emotional development, mental health and the complex relationship between the individual and their inner world.

Alongside my clinical work, I have taught extensively in the UK and internationally and have published widely on psychoanalytic psychotherapy, mental health and gender identity. My publications include:
In addition to my clinical and academic work, I have contributed to national and international discussions on psychotherapy, mental health and gender identity through publications, conference presentations, media interviews and professional teaching.
My work seeks to bring psychoanalytic thinking to contemporary questions about identity, emotional development and psychological wellbeing, encouraging careful reflection rather than certainty.

Why I Resigned from Tavistock: Trans-Identified Children Need Therapy, Not Just "Affirmation"

Written following my resignation from the Board of Governors of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, this essay explains the clinical and ethical concerns that led to my decision.
It argues that children and adolescents experiencing gender distress deserve comprehensive psychological assessment and exploratory psychotherapy rather than an approach driven primarily by affirmation.
The article became one of the earliest and most widely read accounts from a clinician explaining concerns about the direction of the Tavistock Gender Identity Development Service.
